Afropunk Event Coverage in NY for Catarina Magazine

Being selected as an international correspondent to cover Afropunk 2016 in Brooklyn, NY at Commodore Barry Park for Catarina Magazine's 42nd edition, under the direction of editor Patrícia Lima, was both an honor and an unforgettable experience. Afropunk is not just a music festival; it is a powerful cultural movement. For this coverage, I wrote the article titled Afropunk State of Mind, which was beautifully accompanied by the photography of Roncca, whose images captured the vibrant energy and unique style that the festival is known for.

Afropunk's lineup was impressive, featuring artists like Ice Cube, Janelle Monáe, Tyler, The Creator, and TV on the Radio, among others. However, the festival goes far beyond its music. It is a celebration of diversity, individuality, and activism. Afropunk champions the voices of the marginalized, promoting messages of racial equality, gender empowerment, LGBTQ+ rights, and freedom of expression. It’s a space where thousands of people come together to stand up against racism, sexism, homophobia, and all forms of discrimination, while embracing a shared sense of community and safety.

What makes Afropunk truly stand out is its dedication to fostering a space where art, fashion, and music intersect with social justice, creating an atmosphere that encourages dialogue and transformation. The festival showcases not only performances but also the styles, statements, and stories of people redefining mainstream culture—an ideal fit for the ethos of "people lovers" everywhere.

Covering such a culturally significant event for Catarina Magazine was more than just a professional highlight; it was an opportunity to contribute to a conversation that goes beyond borders. Writing about Afropunk’s blend of art and activism, and being part of a movement that advocates for inclusion and freedom, was truly an inspiring experience that resonated deeply with my own values as a writer and as a person. It was an absolute privilege to cover an event that stands for so much and represents such a dynamic fusion of music, style, and social change.
